Sara preparing materials for sand casting, 2021
Making each piece by hand, from her home-based atelier in Antwerp, Sara Mancigotti is the hands & heart, behind Humble Forge Jewellery.
With a humble collection of classics, and new designs added monthly- Sara makes to order each piece in recycled silver. With a zero- waste studio practice- I watch Sara throughout our shoot- making a pair of silver earring while simultaneously- cleaning, conserving materials and with it, preparing already for the next piece.
Sara tells me why her plans for growth include not more machines, but more people in a similar studio-based practice.
Find her story below.
“In the future, when hopefully I will have to increase production, I would prefer to pay an assistant to work with me (and invest in some more tools) rather than move production somewhere else. For me, being able to reply (fast) with a precise name and surname to the question "who made this piece?" is too important.
My goal is to have a slow-fashion business, if it becomes bigger (giving work to more people) I'm happy, If I'll be the only one living out of it, my dream will be fulfilled already.”

"Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing".
Camille Pissarro
I sense humility in Sara’s workspace, her process and in our conversations, but is that why she consciously calls her brand- ‘Humble Forge Jewellery’. Or is there more to this?
As Sara starts the fire to prepare the silver for casting, she takes me back to the very beginnings of her jewelry brand.
As a kid, Sara had watched and absorbed her mother’s love for jewellery, taken lessons in marble-sculpting in Sienna and oil painting portraiture in Florence. Through her studies in natural sciences, she continued to paint and play with materials. And yet, Sara took the path of academia- completed her doctorate in Environmental Engineering, worked in Geology and to her dismay, reached a frustrating burn out.
At the time, she was in Glasgow. On one of those days of contemplations, she visited the Kelvin Hall Museum, and saw a man painting on a wall, this quote from Camille Pissarro- "Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing".
And that was it. Sara had learned that she simply had to use the word ‘humble’ in her brand's name and identity. “Because the entire concept rose from a space of humbleness and gratitude- for being still capable of seeing all forms of beauty, particularly where it is not obvious.”

That is in a way the goal of my project too, I thought- to shine light on beauty where it may not appear obvious.
I continued to shoot Sara as she went on to complete making a pair of eco- silver earrings, with almost no waste.
